Mat Staver
Founder and President, Liberty Counsel
Mathew Staver is an attorney specializing in appellate practice, free speech, and religious liberty constitutional law. He serves as President and General Counsel of Liberty Counsel, Vice President of Law and Policy and member of the Board of Trustees for Liberty University, and Chairman of the Steering Committee of Liberty University School of Law.
Liberty Counsel is a nonprofit litigation, education and policy organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of human life and the traditional family. Established in 1989, Liberty Counsel is a national organization headquartered in Orlando, Florida, with branch offices in Virginia and hundreds of affiliate attorneys in all 50 states. The Center for Constitutional Litigation and Policy (”Center”) operates as one component of Liberty Counsel’s training, education and public policy program. The Center is headquartered on the campus of Liberty University School of Law in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Center trains attorneys, law students, policymakers, legislators, clergy and world leaders in constitutional principles and government policies. Liberty Counsel produces a fifteen-minute daily radio program, Faith & Freedom, a ninety-second daily radio program, Freedom’s Call, and a thirty-minute weekly television program, Law & Justice, all of which deal with various legal and policy issues.
Staver graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Master’s degree in Religion. He was an honorary guest lecturer at the American Society of Oriental Research. He authored Quest for the Historical Jesus: An Inquiry into the Historicity of the Passion Predictions. He reads Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic and Syriac. Staver became a pastor and later graduated from the University of Kentucky law school, where he was captain of the National Moot Court team.
Staver has argued in numerous state and federal courts across the country. He has appeared on numerous briefs before the United States Supreme Court and has argued before the High Court in the landmark Ten Commandments case of McCreary County v. ACLU of Kentucky and the free speech picketing case of Madsen v. Women’s Health Center. He has authored hundreds of articles and written ten books, including Same-Sex Marriage: Putting Every Household at Risk, Faith and Freedom: A Complete Handbook for Defending Your Religious Rights, Eternal Vigilance: Knowing and Protecting Your Religious Freedom, Take Back America, Religious Expression in Public Schools, Religion and the Future of America, Political Activity of Nonprofit Organizations, Union Membership and Its Constitutional Implications, Same-Sex Marriage, and Judicial Tyranny. Mr. Staver is considered one of the premier constitutional litigators in the country and conducts hundreds of media interviews each year.
